Where is the retina and macula?
Image the structure of your eye like a traditional camera. Retina is in the back of your eye like the film inside of the camera. The center of the retina is the macula where the most light-sensitive cells that allows you to see color and fine detail. Images received by retina are sent through optic to the brain for processing. Retina or macula, once damaged, can lead to irreversible vision loss.
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans over the age of 60 and it occurs in 2 different forms. The dry AMD is more common when light-sensitive cells in the macula slowly break down, leading to a gradual blurring of central vision. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula, often leaking blood and fluid, severely damage the macular, leading to a rapid loss of central vision.
